Chassis Trailer Mechanic

This position is responsible for providing quality service to customers and ensuring the completion of a multitude of tasks to ensure the success of our freight operations. A chassis mechanic performs preventative and corrective maintenance on a trailer or intermodal vehicle. As a chassis mechanic, you inspect trailers, troubleshoot for any existing problems, and repair them for use and distribution. This includes repairing ABS systems, air brake systems, wheel ends, and structural assemblies. Each repair must be documented to ensure there is a historical record of each trailer you work on. Other duties and responsibilities include diligently keeping paperwork or using a mobile application to log work orders.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy
  • Diagnoses cause of malfunctions and performs repair.
  • Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts.
  • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
  • Communicates with service advisor/dispatcher immediately on repair updates and or delays.
  • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Ensures vehicle is kept clean.
  • Maintains and is accountable for all shop-owned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as when they were received.
  • Operates all tools/equipment in a safe manner and reports any safety issues immediately to management.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Trailer electrical
  • Commercial tires
  • ASE Certification a plus
  • TWIC card/port badge preferred, but not required
  • Valid CDL License a plus
  • Ability to work with little supervision

Education and Experience:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Minimum 2 years' experience required
